White Lights vs Colored Lights

8 Dec

Growing up we always had a real Christmas tree decorated with color lights. My husband grew up with decorating a fake tree with white lights.  I have compromised. The first floor is decorated with the bright white lights with coordinating matching ornaments and the finished basement gets decorated with colored and a mix match of ornaments.

During the Christmas season how do you decorate?

Shopping for Him

7 Dec

Christmas is around the corner and I am just about finished with my shopping. I am still figuring out what to get my darling Husband. We are not doing big gifts, but still looking for something quality!

Below are of my ideas I wanted to share:

  1. Husky 20 in. and 8 in. totes – I hope to never hear “Where is that…” again.

2.  Personalized Watch Case – This is gift he actually bought for himself, but wanted to share as I wish I had got it for him.

3. LED Knit Hat – These actually are very bright at night! A cheaper gift that is perfect for the outdoors man.

4. Car Wash Coupons! I usually get a 10 pack from out nearest Carwash. He just loves these, especially for the winter!

5. Smoker  – We smoked our Thanksgiving turkey this year and now he is obsessed!

Please share your ideas!!

Japanese Beetles

29 Jul

Japanese Beetles

Please go away! You have completely ruined my rose garden and how you are have started on my other flowers!

Every evening after work I put on my kitchen gloves, grab my mop bucket full of soapy water and spend an hour picking all the beetles I can find. (The picking has been going on for a week) I have bought some spray from Home Depot, but have yet to hook it to the hose.

Anyone else having the nasty little friends visiting their garden?

Top Ten – Places to Visit in the US!

7 Jan

My top ten places in the US.

10. Houghton Lake, Mi – My All time favorite place to be. Largest inland lake in Michigan. We spent every summer at our grandparents house since I was born.
9.  Louisville, Ky – If you ever have the chance to visit Louisville I recommend that you go. My sister used to live there and a dear friend from college still does. We try to make it to the Kentucky Derby each year. This is an event that you have to go to at least once in your lifetime! Don’t forget your big fancy hat!
8. Niagara Falls – Passing through on our way to New York we stopped on a raining afternoon. I feel I need to go back again to appreciate the beauty.  It is crazy the amount of water that dumps over the fall.
7. Yosemite – As a child we went camping in Yosemite. From what I remember, the trees were huge and it got really cold at night. We also saw Half Dome.
6. Lake Tahoe – I have been during the winter and summer months. Once as a child and once after college.  My uncle took me skiing, which I had not idea how to do. At the time I was very scared to go down those big mountains. The scenery from the chair lifts was incredible. You can see for miles and miles.
5. Wash DC – My sister lived outside DC and I was only able to visit her once before they moved. We did the tour of DC and all the monuments. Amazing. I highly recommend taking time to do a day trip. Stop at all the monuments and take in what they all offer. My favorite was FDR.
4. San Francisco, CA – I have family just outside of San Fran. I have been there twice, once when I was a child and after college. This city has so much to offer. I need to go back again to full appreciate it.  Fishermen dwarf is a great tourist attraction. We did not visit Alcatraz, but when I go back I will.
3. Boston, Mass – Spent a day visiting this city at the end of summer a few years ago. We were in the are for a short weekend. I often mention this weekend to my husband as one of our favorites! We visited the Aquarium, toured Harvard campus and stopped at some of the local bars.
2. Kauai, Hawaii – Went for a wedding. Absolutely breath taking! This island does not have much of a night life, but that didn’t matter. We spent our days in the sun on the beaches and our evening hanging out under our Lanai. The funnest thing to see were all the chickens. They roam free like pigeons and are all over the island.
1. Round Pond, Maine – Spent a 3 week vacation here. The beaches, the air, and the sun were so clean. I often think back to this vacation and how I would like to go back some day. Fresh lobster every day!

What is your favorite city and have you been to any of these locations?

Product Review – Contigo

28 Sep

I have a rather large collection of coffee mugs. I am to the point of throwing them all out and starting over. Some last long enough for a 10 minute car ride. Some have flown off the roof of my car. Some are missing handles and one has a small leak on the bottom. I think it is dishwasher dripping out.

My world changed last Christmas when I received a Contigo. I give it 4 out of 4 stars!

Pros: The Contigo will keep your coffee warm until lunch. I have literally taken a sip at noon before and it was still warm. The website says it keeps warm for 4 hours and can keep a drink cold for up to 12 hours.

I have flipped the container upside down, twirled it on my desk, stood it on its head and a drop never escaped! It has a autoseal button that keeps it 100% spill proof!

It has a great shape and comes in several colors.

Cons: Cleaning the top mouth piece sometimes can be a challenge. I always give it a good scrub at night, but I can’t seem to get my lip gloss off from the night before. Also may need a little cleaning brush to get into the small sipping spout.

Cost: I did not purchase my mug but the price is pretty reasonable. It it around $20.

Important tips: Do not microwave or freeze. Dishwasher safe. Do not overfill.

Hope you find this review helpful.

You live in Michigan when …

27 Sep

MICHIGAN… according to Jeff Foxworthy:

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May, you may live in Michigan.

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don’t even work there, you may live in Michigan.

If you’ve worn shorts and a jacket at the same time, you may live in Michigan.

If you’ve had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Michigan.

If “vacation” means going anywhere North of Grand Rapids for the weekend, you may live in Michigan.

If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Michigan.

If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Michigan.

If you have switched from ‘heat’ to ‘A/C’ in the same day and back again, you may live in Michigan.

If you can drive 75 mph through 2 fee…t of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you may live in Michigan.

If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both doors unlocked, you may live in Michigan.

If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Michigan.

If you design your kid’s Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you may live in Michigan.

If the speed limit on the highway is 70 mph -you’re going 80 and everybody is passing you, you may live in Michigan.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you may live in Michigan.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction, you may live in Michigan.

If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you may live in Michigan.

If you find 10 degrees “a little chilly”, you may live in Michigan.

If you actually understand these jokes, repost this so all of your Michigan friends and others can see, you definitely do live – or have lived – in Michigan

Pretty Funny and TRUE!

Top 10 – in your purse!

21 Sep

Stopped by a blogger friend of mine to see what was new with her and she had a fabulous post titled “Put that in your Purse“. Jessica runs a fabulous blog titles: My Time as Mom. Now, I am not a mom yet, but I liked the idea so much that I decided to dig through my very unorganized purse to see what my MUST haves were! I am not including to usual things like check book, wallet. etc.. (I did find my tiffany bracelet in a hidden pocket, WAHOO!)

10. Aleve – This is my go to medicine! Perfect for cramps or headaches!

9. Smell Goods – I always give a little spritz before I head into work, before a meeting, or grocery store.

8. My glasses case – Never know when you need to take them off!

7. Business cards – You may run into someone new or someone old! I have professional work business cards, but I like to hand out my fun personalized ones!

6. A little scratch pad of paper – Sometimes I just want to doodle.

5. Hair clips or pony tail holder – I have Hair Gone Wild. I freak if I cant find a hair tie so every time I find one laying around I throw it in my purse!

4. Mints or pack of gum – Have to keep your mouth so fresh and so clean clean!

3. Mini Hand Sanitize – Nothing worse then touching some unknown object and you cant get to the sink!

2. Shiny lipgloss – Nothing expensive because I ALWAYS lose them! As my Grandma says, but not a quote “A girl should always have a little lipstick on!”

1. A Black Sharpie – You would be surprised how many times I have pulled out my sharpie to save the day!

There is not anything that out of the ordinary on my top 10 list. How about yours – what is your top ten?

Hold My Hand

13 Sep

The time we have is so limited these days. We rush around from place to place.

Some days fly by without even a kiss. Before we know it there is another moment that we have missed.

The value of our lives can be determined in so many ways. Joy, time, wealth, happiness, trust, success and love.

The way people list their values comes from how they were raised or not raised. It is amazing how different two people thoughts can be.

When you are in love and bonded to another it takes work to make each of your values are respected. You will have to bend a little, it is a give and take. But make sure that you always stay true to what you believe and do not have to act Fake.

Kind words, gentle voices and holding of hands are just a few ways to bring each other back to the light and remember where it all started.

Be kind. It is so easy to forget.

hold my hand

100th Post!

1 Sep

This blog was created in December 2010. The idea was to explore different cooking recipes, the ups and down living with my husband and how life changes as you head into the next stages in your life. Almost two years later I have hit my 100th post and almost 8,000 views. It’s crazy to think that anyone would want to read what I have to say. I greatly appreciate all the support, comments and feedback I have received thus far. Thank you.

It is fun to look back and reread old posts! Here are my top five posts!

1)A Wordless Wednesday dedicated to a piece of art my mother created for my husband for Christmas.

Tip of the thumb, Michigan

2) I am always looking for new recipes. There is a tab at the top of the blog  “Share your Recipes” . where I am  looking for you to share a good family recipe or one that you love to cook!

3)The third most popular post goes to a shout out to the month of May – National Food Month. I reached out to people who have blogged about the foods that are honored in the month of May. Stop by and see all the different recipes! Strawberries, Salsa, Asparagus… If you have a blog post please feel free to add in the comments!

4)I hate to even mention this post that I shared about a little problem we had with White kitchen mites. After several attempts with bug killer, orkin man, and lots of scrubbing these nasty little things finally went away on their own! Click the picture to read the full story!
