Top Ten – Places to Visit in the US!

7 Jan

My top ten places in the US.

10. Houghton Lake, Mi – My All time favorite place to be. Largest inland lake in Michigan. We spent every summer at our grandparents house since I was born.
9.  Louisville, Ky – If you ever have the chance to visit Louisville I recommend that you go. My sister used to live there and a dear friend from college still does. We try to make it to the Kentucky Derby each year. This is an event that you have to go to at least once in your lifetime! Don’t forget your big fancy hat!
8. Niagara Falls – Passing through on our way to New York we stopped on a raining afternoon. I feel I need to go back again to appreciate the beauty.  It is crazy the amount of water that dumps over the fall.
7. Yosemite – As a child we went camping in Yosemite. From what I remember, the trees were huge and it got really cold at night. We also saw Half Dome.
6. Lake Tahoe – I have been during the winter and summer months. Once as a child and once after college.  My uncle took me skiing, which I had not idea how to do. At the time I was very scared to go down those big mountains. The scenery from the chair lifts was incredible. You can see for miles and miles.
5. Wash DC – My sister lived outside DC and I was only able to visit her once before they moved. We did the tour of DC and all the monuments. Amazing. I highly recommend taking time to do a day trip. Stop at all the monuments and take in what they all offer. My favorite was FDR.
4. San Francisco, CA – I have family just outside of San Fran. I have been there twice, once when I was a child and after college. This city has so much to offer. I need to go back again to full appreciate it.  Fishermen dwarf is a great tourist attraction. We did not visit Alcatraz, but when I go back I will.
3. Boston, Mass – Spent a day visiting this city at the end of summer a few years ago. We were in the are for a short weekend. I often mention this weekend to my husband as one of our favorites! We visited the Aquarium, toured Harvard campus and stopped at some of the local bars.
2. Kauai, Hawaii – Went for a wedding. Absolutely breath taking! This island does not have much of a night life, but that didn’t matter. We spent our days in the sun on the beaches and our evening hanging out under our Lanai. The funnest thing to see were all the chickens. They roam free like pigeons and are all over the island.
1. Round Pond, Maine – Spent a 3 week vacation here. The beaches, the air, and the sun were so clean. I often think back to this vacation and how I would like to go back some day. Fresh lobster every day!

What is your favorite city and have you been to any of these locations?

End of Summer – Houghton Lake, MI

Here is another painting my mother did for a friend. This is a swing up at my grandmother’s house that over looks Houghton Lake, Mi. We have had many amazing memories up at the Lake. This picture has captured every memory from every summer for that last 20 years!

Monday Memories

30 Jan

Sometime I really miss how easy life was growing up. Dinner was always ready, long summer vacations,  and the excitement of Christmas.

Top 10 favorite memories

1 Summer Vacation. Each summer my mother would send us up to our grandparents cottage at Houghton Lake. There was no other place my sisters and I would rather be. Months of warms sunny weather and floating in the lake morning to dark.

2. TV shows and Movies: Saved by the bell, Fresh Prince of Belair, TGIF on Friday nights, Goonies, Harry and the Hendersons, Monsters under my bed.

3. Snow: Do you remember those days? We would play for hours in the snow. sledding, making snowmen, snowball fight, tobogganing

4. Riding the Bus: At the time we HATED riding the bus. But it is a fun memory. When we say the lights in the morning coming down the hill we would all rush out the door yelling “BUUSSSSSS” for all the neighbor kids to come running.

5. Sports:  A few years ago I blew out my right shoulder. Havent played since.  But I was really good at Shot Put and decent at Volleyball.

6. 84′ caprice classic: Each of my sisters drove this car when we were in high school. We named her the Blue Bessy and she was nondestructive!  We would fit four comfortably across the front bench seat and five across the back. That car rocked!

7. Pets: We grew up with a lot of pets. Dogs, Cats, Chickens, Ponies…. Living on a farm are memories that I will also cherish. We used to have hundreds of chickens that would roam free. Which meant they were everywhere. In the trees, they would sneak in the porch, some even made it into the house.

8. Sharing a room: This was torture growing up. “Stay on your side” and “Where is my favorite shirt”.  Now I can’t wait until I am together with my sisters again. I alway smile when I think of the penny fights in the middle of the night.

9. Trips to Florida: Every Easter break we would load the car and we would drive to Florida to see our Grandparents. From Michigan it was about 21 hours.  We would usually get to take off an extra week when we went. By the second day on the sun we had to wear our t-shirts we would be so sun burnt.

10. Sleepovers: Literally every weekend we would have a house full of 15+ girls. Since there were 4 of us we each would a handful of friends over.   My dad would just go to his room and we would take over the house.  We would move all the mattress into the living room, get tons of junk food, and rent cheesy movies.

Though I miss the good old days. I got it pretty good now.  Still have my parents farm (only one chicken left), when my sisters come into town we have sleepovers. We still head to Houghton Lake in the summer and head to Florida for a short stay in the winter to to see our wonderful Grandmother. We sold the Caprice, but my dad swears he still see it on the road.

What are some of your favorite childhood memories?

My husband decided that the swing (facing the water) would be a nice place to take an afternoon nap. We were up at my grandmothers cottage and I was  cleaning out the flower garden when I turned around to see what the dog was doing.  To my surprise, Houghtie decided that he also wanted to sit on the swing!

Happy Second Anniversary

15 Aug

Two years ago today we were married! Since I spent every single summer at Houghton Lake with my Grandparents it was only appropriate that we get married there. With a little negotiating with my now hubby I got my wish.

The weather that summer was terrible. I was so very fortunate that the four day weekend we planned Mother Nature was on our side. It could not have been anymore amazing.

We stayed at The Comfort Suites.  A lovely hotel right on the water that was very accommodating and were great to work with. There were only a few minor glitches ( honeymoon suite air conditioner broke and it was 98 degrees while getting ready and stayed that warm into the night)

For our rehearsal dinner we rented a big paddle boat for a few hours that took the wedding party and some family around the lake. We also rented the huge water park inside the hotel after the wedding for 2 hours. They had water slides, hot tubes, lazy rivers. The best and most dangerous part was they brought all the left over liquor. The party lasted until about 2:30 am.

Great photo looking down from the Hotel.

The pictures from a different angle looks like the dock is going to cave in.

We hand each center piece. Lots of Micheal’s runs.

These photos are obviously only a few photos from our special day, but they are some of my favorites.

Can’t believe it is already two years. How long have you been married?

I’m sorry little blog..

6 Jun

Now that the warm summer months have finally arrived I feel I have neglected my blog as well as the purpose of my blog: cooking, exploring the recipe world and learning new techniques.

We are not cooped up inside anymore, but rather out enjoying the warm weather on bike rides, BBQing, long walks, yard work……. this list goes on.  This weather change has really put a toll on my experimenting with new dishes and spending countless hours in the Kitchen. That is okay though, right? I can always come back to that…

For now we will enjoy the beautiful summer and be grateful for what God has given us today!
