Wordless Wednesday

6 Jun

It is that time of year again.

The sound of the creepy circus music can be heard blocks away and

kids waiting anxiously at the ends of their driveway just hoping this beauty will come down their street!

Have you encountered one of these yet this year?

Camera Settings.

18 Jun

I always blame the camera, but I think it may be user error. I always get so angry with our cameras. If I only read the manual I would understand what I was pushing or what I should be setting I should be in.  I ended up taking a bunch of beautiful pics and I don’t even know how the settings got changed!

Here are a a few photos of a sunset at our cottage..

I’m sorry little blog..

6 Jun

Now that the warm summer months have finally arrived I feel I have neglected my blog as well as the purpose of my blog: cooking, exploring the recipe world and learning new techniques.

We are not cooped up inside anymore, but rather out enjoying the warm weather on bike rides, BBQing, long walks, yard work……. this list goes on.  This weather change has really put a toll on my experimenting with new dishes and spending countless hours in the Kitchen. That is okay though, right? I can always come back to that…

For now we will enjoy the beautiful summer and be grateful for what God has given us today!

Fresh Summer Drinks

24 May

I found a few drink recipes in an old Food network magazine for some fresh summer drink and felt the need to share! Very simple and refreshing!

Blackberry Lemonade
Combine 2 cups of blackberries with 2 cups of simple syrup* in a pitcher.
Stir 2 cups of fresh lemon juice and 2 cups of water.
Add Ice and a few lemon slices.

Mint Limeade
Mix 2 lime wedges and some mint leaves in a glass. Drop in some ice cubes.
In a pitcher mix 2 cups of simple syrup* and 2 cups of water.
Dump in 1 1/2 cups fresh lime juice and 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice – poor into glass.

Cinnamon Grapefruit – Not a cinnamon fan, but this tasted very good!
Make 2 cups of simple syrup* and add 4 cinnamon sticks
Once cooled, pour into ice filled pitcher.
Add 2 cups of fresh grapefruit and 2 cups of water. Drop in some raspberries for some extra color and flavor.

Simple Syrup
Bring to a boil 1 1/2 cups of sugar and 1 1/2 cups of water. Stir until dissolved and let cool. (makes 2 cups)

My favorite was the Blackberry Lemonade.

Summer Weekends

23 May

I am not sure when summer arrived, but I am sure glad to see you again. Last weekend I was driving down our street and all of a sudden noticed the big old oak trees were full of life with huge green leaves. When the hell did that happen?

Many of the spring-flowering trees have already come and gone. The lilac bushes, which are my favorite, are just finishing up their bloom and we have already cut the grass and laid a bunch of seed down. It is unbelievable how fast time flies by.

In early May I sent my husband a calendar of what our summer was going look like. I was pleasantly surprised that we actually have a lot of free weekends this year.

Say we have 16 weekends to enjoy the warm summer weather, give or take a few. Here is how I broke it down for him.

  • Three baby showers: It seems as though we have made it past the summers of weddings (we had 9 in one summer once!) and have moved on to baby showers and 30th Bday parties!
  • Two 30th Birthday parties (not including mine)
  • Memorial Weekend at Grandma’s Cottage.
  • 4th of July weekend and my 30th – Taking the week off to celebrate!
  • Family Reunion

I am very excited that SO FAR only 8 of the 16 weekends are spoken for. This is going to be a great summer of free time, traveling, boating, and just enjoying the warm weather!

How is your summer looking and how many free weekends do you have?!

Sunflowers!

23 Feb

I came across these photos I took last summer and I wanted to share them with you. It made me smile and reminded me that there is life after a very snowy winter. This year in Michigan we have been slammed with snow. Not that I don’t mind it, but sometimes you just need  to be reminded that it WILL melt soon. =)

Every year I plant hundreds of sunflowers for my grandmother. My whole summer revolves around those silly flowers and how they are doing. Who ever is visiting her at the time I ask very nicely for them to please check on my flowers and give them a nice drink of water.  This past year I started the seedlings in a plastic bowl and let them germinate before I stuck them in the ground. I may have let them grow a little to long..

Oh Summer – I miss you!
